Dell Technologies, Northwestern Medicine collaborate on AI-driven patient care innovations

Dell Technologies and Northwestern Medicine have announced a collaboration to use artificial intelligence (AI) to strengthen patient care and deliver advancements in medicine. One of the key developments from this partnership is the creation and evaluation of a generative multimodal large language model (LLM) for interpreting chest x-rays, Dell Technologies said in a statement.

Northwestern Medicine designed and tested workflow solutions by working with Dell’s AI Innovation Lab before deploying them into their own IT environment. The collaboration led to the development of a multimodal LLM that generates draft x-ray reports, assisting physicians in their decision-making process.

Dr. Mozziyar Etemadi, medical director of Advanced Technologies at Northwestern Medicine, leads the research and development team within Northwestern Medicine Information Services. The team is currently working on projects that leverage Dell’s AI technology to push the boundaries of healthcare innovation. These projects include an improved version of the multimodal LLM for radiology reports and a predictive model for the entire electronic medical record.

The AI platform is built within Northwestern Medicine’s existing secure colocation infrastructure, providing the healthcare provider with the confidence to move forward rapidly with AI initiatives that innovate patient care.

Dell’s infrastructure for the project includes PowerEdge XE9680 servers with 8 Nvidia H100 Tensor Core GPUs, Nvidia Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking, PowerScale, PowerFlex, PowerMax, and VxRail.
