Yahoo Expanding New York Data Center

Yahoo plans to build new data and customer care centers in Lockport, New York later this year; a move that is expected to create some some 115 new jobs across engineering, technology, and customer care fields. The planned expansion builds upon Yahoo’s existing Lockport data center facility, which opened in 2010.

Yahoo’s new data center will utilize the company’s YahooCompute Coop (YCC) architecture. The YCC is an energy-efficient data center design uses significantly less energy and water than conventional data centers, says Yahoo. The shape of the building, and the use of outside air-cooling for approximately ninety-eight percent of the year, eliminates the need for energy-intensive chillers to keep the servers cool.

Yahoo also plans to contribute $3.5 million to a local community organization, Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, over the next seven years.
