Square expands offline payments globally

Payment processing company Square has announced the expansion of its offline payments feature to all hardware devices and countries. The offline payments solution allows Square sellers to continue processing transactions even when there is no internet connection or during service disruptions.

Offline payments allow sellers to conduct business outside of mobile coverage areas or when facing technical issues on their end, according to Square. Sellers can activate offline payments in their Square settings or when their Square point of sale detects a connectivity issue. They have 24 hours to reconnect to the internet to upload and process payments, with fully customizable transaction limits.

Square first introduced “Offline Mode” to the original Square Reader for magstripe in 2014. In early 2022, the offline functionality was expanded to Square Register and Square Terminal, covering about half of Square’s global seller population. Now, offline payments are available across the entire Square hardware lineup, including Square Stand and Square Reader for contactless and chip.
