Microsoft Unveils Windows Holographics, HoloLens Headets

Microsoft is getting into the virtual reality space with its just-announced HoloLens, a holographic computer enabled by Windows 10. The head-mounted HoloLens display is expected to be compatible with Xbox One gaming consoles.

The Redmond giant dubbed Windows 10 as the world’s first holographic computing platform. Windows 10  will include APIs that enable developers to create holographic experiences in the real world. With Windows 10, holograms become Windows universal apps, and all Windows universal apps can also work as holograms — making it possible to place three-dimensional holograms in the physical world.

Microsoft HoloLens features see-through holographic high-definition lenses and spatial sound. The device comes with sensors, a next-generation system on a chip and the addition of a Holographic Processing Unit (HPU). Microsoft HoloLens is able to run without any wires while processing terabytes of data from the sensors in real time. Microsoft HoloLens is not just the world’s first holographic computer, it is the first untethered holographic computer as well — no wires, phones or connection to a PC is needed to run it.
