The Marconi Society has issued a call for nominations for its 2012 Paul Baran Young Scholar Awards, which recognize outstanding young scientists and engineers anywhere in the world who have demonstrated exceptional capabilities and potential. Nominees must be age 27 or younger in the year that the award is given.
Paul Baran Young Scholars receive a $4000 cash prize plus $1000 in expenses to attend the Society’s annual awards gala, which this year will be held September 6th in Irvine, CA. Three awards will be given in 2012.
Founded in 1974 by Gioia Marconi Braga to honor her father, radio inventor Guglielmo Marconi, the Marconi Society recognizes the achievements of living scientists in the field of information and communications science. It is best known for its Marconi Prize, given annually to an individual or individuals whose accomplishments in the field of communications and the Internet have significantly benefited mankind. Among its recipients have been Qualcomm co-founder Irwin Mark Jacobs, Adobe founders Chuck Geschke and John Warnock, Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, Ethernet inventor Robert Metcalfe, IP/TCP Protocol co-inventors Vint Cerf and Robert Kahn and turbo code discoverer Claude Berrou.
