IBM Buys Data Transfer Company Aspera

IBM has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Emeryville, CA-based Aspera. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The acquisition of Aspera is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the first quarter 2014.

Aspera’s technology helps companies speed the movement of massive data files around the world. Aspera is used by Apple to upload videos to the iTunes store (read the customer story here), and was used by James Cameron in the production of Avatar. Aspera clients include NetApp, Netflix, PBS, Rovio, Random House, and Universal, among others.
