Fire At Internet Archive, No Major Damage

Internet_Archive

A fire at Internet Archive’s San Francisco scanning office last Wednesday affected a scanning center and twenty boxes of books and films. The organization also lost cameras, lights, and scanning equipment worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Internet Archive operates 30 scanning centers.

No servers were affected, and even if they were, Internet Archive says they have backups in different locations.

Every day some three million people use the Internet Archive collections. The organization has archived some 10 petabytes of information. The Internet Archive, a non-profit organization, is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form, accessible to the public.

The Internet Archive is collecting donations if you are interested in helping out.
