Why should I be excited about another cell phone? Aah, but this is not just another cell phone. This is umm, the One, as the name not so subtly suggests. My frail attempt at humor aside, the One was built specifically for CyanogenMod, and packs quite a bit of punch and panache for a $299 price tag, which is how much the entry-level model costs.

What is CyanogenMod? CyanogenMod is an Android-based open source firmware distribution for smartphones and tablets. You can read more about CyanogenMod here. The One uses CyanogenMod 11S.

Who are the OnePlus guys? OnePlus is a technology startup founded by Pete Lau, former vice president with electronics company Oppo. The product philosophy of OnePlus is ‘Never Settle.’ “Our goal is to make a product worthy of those with a discerning and critical eye. We will work tirelessly to build that product for you,” proclaims the company website. You can read more about OnePlus here.

How much does the OnePlus One cost? The 16GB model costs $299/€269, the 64GB version costs $349/€299.

Can I find the One in my country? The OnePlus One will initially be available in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and the United States.

Can I get the One right now? You need to sign up for an invite, or have a friend invite you to buy the phone. The One is expected to be available for all from the second quarter this year.
