Amazon to invest up to $4B in Anthropic

Amazon will invest up to $4 billion in Anthropic, developers of the large language model (LLM) Claude, and will acquire a minority ownership stake in the company. The two companies also announced a strategic agreement aimed at the development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) models.

Under the agreement, Anthropic will use AWS’s Trainium and Inferentia chips to develop its foundation models. Additionally, AWS will become the primary cloud provider for Anthropic’s mission-critical operations, including safety research and foundation model development.

Anthropic will make its models available to AWS customers through Bedrock, a fully managed AWS service. Developers and engineers at Amazon will have the ability to integrate Anthropic’s models into their work through Bedrock. Customers will also have early access to features for model customization and fine-tuning. (Read more on Claude on Bedrock here.)

The partnership will also include resources through the AWS Generative AI Innovation Center, aimed at helping customers develop new AI-powered applications. Existing customers like Lonely Planet, Bridgewater Associates, and LexisNexis have already benefitted from the advanced AI technology offered through AWS and Anthropic, according to Amazon.
