SGI To Build World’s Largest Commercial HPC System

[Techtaffy Newsdesk]

Oil and gas group Total has selected SGI to provide a high performance computing (HPC) solution capable of delivering compute power of 2.3 petaflops per second. SGI says this is going to be the world’s largest commercial HPC system.

The new system will consist of the latest generation of SGI ICE X servers, and be based  at the Total Jean Féger Scientific and Technical Centre (CSTJF) in Pau, southwest France. The price of the system was not disclosed.

Ron Verdoorn (Interim CEO, SGI): The needs for compute-intensive data processing in the oil and gas industry are constantly increasing.  With data files exceeding ten petabytes, technological innovation for reservoir modeling and simulation relies not only on compute architectures but also on storage architectures.
