Broadcom Launches SoC Devices With 5G WiFi

Broadcom has launched System on a Chip (SoC) devices with 5G WiFi with high-bandwidth Gigabit connectivity for the home and SMB network. The new Broadcom SoCs combine a high performance processor, Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) switch, GbE physical layer transceivers (PHYs), USB 3.0 and traffic accelerators all on a single chip.

The new devices also feature Broadcom’s energy efficient Ethernet functionality, delivering an additional 70 percent reduction in power consumption while networks are active and up to 95 percent during downtime, says the company.

Increased reliance on wireless networks, the explosion of video consumption, and growing number of wireless devices are all putting stress on legacy 802.11a/b/g/n networks. 5G WiFi addresses these challenges, enabling mobile device users to stream digital content between devices faster, and simultaneously connect more wireless devices to home and enterprise networks, while conserving battery power.

The StrataGX BCM5301x and the BCM4708x series are sampling with production release slated for the second half of 2012.
