IBM Greenest Company In US: Newsweek

IBM  has been recognized for the second consecutive year as the greenest company in the country, according to the Newsweek 2012 Green Rankings survey. A panel of independent judges ranked major companies based on numerous criteria, including their environmental impact, environmental management and sustainability disclosure. IBM was one of 500 large U.S. organizations evaluated. The report notes that IBM'S Smarter Planet products and services help clients measure and reduce their resource consumption while saving money. It points to a system developed at the company's Zurich Research Lab, where water that cools a supercomputer is used to warm nearby buildings. Sprint Confirms Softbank Acquisition Discussions

Sprint has confirmed that the company is currently engaged in discussions with Softbank regarding a "potential substantial investment." Sprint said that such a transaction could involve a change of control of Sprint, but declined to give further details. SoftBank Mobile, a Japanese telecom giant, has reportedly offered $12.5 billion for a stake in Sprint.

New Samsung Phones Added To Virgin Prepaid Collection

PayLo by Virgin Mobile and Samsung Mobile, are launching two new cell phone models, to be available without contract. The Samsung Entro is available for $14.99. The phone features a 1.77 in. main display screen, Web access, external color display, text messaging, and speakerphone, among other things. The Samsung Montage, to be available later this month, offers more  features including a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 2.0MP camera and camcorder, Bluetooth, threaded text messaging, email, Web access, MP3 and video player, voice mail and caller ID. The Montage will be available for $49.99 . PayLo by Virgin Mobile, is one of Sprint's prepaid brands. PayLo offers $40 monthly unlimited talk, text plans and 50MB  Web access plans.

Firefox Mobile OS Phones Coming Early 2013

Mozilla's plans for a new fully open mobile ecosystem based on HTML5 is gathering steam, with backing from several global operators. The operating system, which Mozilla confirmed will use its Firefox brand, will power the launch of smartphones built entirely to open Web standards, where all of the device’s capabilities can be developed as HTML5 applications. Samsung Galaxy S III Is Almost Here

Sprint Nextel To Retire $1B Of 2013 Debt Maturities

Sprint Nextel says it intends to redeem a portion of fourth quarter 2013 debt maturities with an aggregate principal amount of $1 billion on June 8, 2012. The securities comprising the partial debt retirement are the Nextel Communications, Inc. 6.875% Notes due 2013. The Notes will be redeemed at par, plus accrued and unpaid interest until the redemption date. After this partial retirement, the remaining outstanding principal balance of such Notes will be approximately $473 million.

Sprint Nextel Gets $1 Billion To Go Equipment Shopping

Sprint Nextel has entered into a new $1 billion credit facility with Deutsche Bank and a syndicate of other banks to finance equipment purchases from Ericsson for Network Vision. The borrowers under the secured credit facility are all of Sprint’s subsidiaries that currently guarantee Sprint’s revolving bank credit facility, and the obligations will be secured by a lien on the equipment purchased from Ericsson in connection with Network Vision and guaranteed by Sprint. The secured credit facility expires in March 2017 and benefits from a cost of funding of approximately 6 percent provided by AB Svensk Exportkredit and comprehensive insurance cover from EKN, the Swedish Export Credit Agency. Sprint Shareholders Elect Directors

Sprint shareholders elected ten directors at the company's 2012 annual shareholders’ meeting, which was held in Overland Park, Kan. Shareholders voted to elect each of the following nominees for a one-year term: Robert R. Bennett, Gordon M. Bethune, Larry C. Glasscock, James H. Hance, Jr., Daniel R. Hesse, V. Janet Hill, Frank Ianna, Sven-Christer Nilsson, William R. Nuti and Rodney O'Neal. All directors received at least 88 per cent of the votes cast with Chairman Hance receiving 92 per cent and CEO Hesse receiving more than 90 per cent. Shareholders also ratified the selection of KPMG as Sprint's independent auditor for 2012 with 99 percent of the votes cast supporting the measure. Sprint Earns $2 Billion WSCA Contract

The Western States Contracting Alliance (WSCA) has awarded Sprint a four-year, $2 billion contract to serve as one of its wireless products and services providers. The contract with WSCA, a national public sector purchasing consortium, represents one of the largest for Sprint in 2012. The WSCA purchasing consortium is composed of 15 states that have joined together for increased buying power through cooperative multistate contracting. State and local government entities (including public safety, public education, health care and utilities) and authorized non-profit organizations across the country use WSCA’s purchasing capabilities.

Sprint Offers Android Customers Free Norton Mobile Security Lite

Sprint and Norton by Symantec announced that they are providing Sprint customers access to Norton Mobile Security Lite. With Norton Mobile Security Lite, a free security application for Android-based smartphones, customers can remotely lock their smartphone with a simple text message if it is lost or stolen. Norton Mobile Security Lite also scans all files and application updates downloaded to a device and automatically detects and removes threats. Sprint customers using select Android-powered devices can download the Norton Mobile Security Lite application from Google Play by clicking on the application within Sprint Zone or the Sprint Tab in Google Play.
