Twitter opens applications for Verified Status

Twitter has launched an open online application process for Twitter-verified status. Verified accounts on Twitter are accounts where the identity of the account-holder – people or organizations – have been confirmed. These accounts have a blue badge icon next to them.

An account may be verified if it is determined to be of public interest, says Twitter. Typically this includes accounts maintained by public figures and organizations in music, TV, film, fashion, government, politics, religion, journalism, media, sports, or business.

“We want to make it even easier for people to find creators and influencers on Twitter so it makes sense for us to let people apply for verification,” said Tina Bhatnagar, Twitter’s vice president of User Services.

Twitter introduced account verification in 2009. The microblogging site currently has close to 187,000 verified accounts.

The application process will start rolling out on Tuesday, and be available globally this week.
