Argonne National Laboratory has announced the appointment of Sean Jones as the new Deputy Laboratory Director for Science and Technology, effective from October 9. In this role, Mr. Jones will serve as a senior science strategist, advisor, and chief research officer, according to the organization.
Mr. Jones is currently the assistant director of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences directorate at the National Science Foundation (NSF). He has overseen a significant portfolio worth $1.86 billion, encompassing five science divisions, both domestic and international research facilities, and various interdisciplinary research programs, centers, and institutes.
Before his tenure at NSF, Mr. Jones held various positions in academia and industry. His professional journey included roles at institutions such as the University of Florida, Norfolk State University, Applied Plasmonics, Bell Laboratories of Lucent Technologies, and Luxcore Networks. He holds advanced degrees in materials science and engineering from the University of Florida, along with a bachelor’s degree in ceramic engineering from Clemson University.
