Red Hat to acquire CoreOS for $250 million

Red Hat has signed a definitive agreement to acquire CoreOS, a provider of Kubernetes and container-native solutions, for a purchase price of $250 million.

Founded in 2013, CoreOS is the creator of CoreOS Tectonic, an enterprise-ready Kubernetes platform based on open source software. The company also offers CoreOS Quay, an enterprise-ready container registry.

CoreOS is also helping drive several open source containerized applications initiatives, said Red Hat in a statement. These include Kubernetes, where it is a contributor; Container Linux, a lightweight Linux distribution created and maintained by CoreOS that automates software updates and is streamlined for running containers; etcd, a distributed data store for Kubernetes; and rkt, an application container engine, donated to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), that helped drive the current Open Container Initiative (OCI) standard.

The transaction is expected to close in January 2018, subject to customary closing conditions.

Kubernetes is an open source container orchestration system originating from Google. It manages distributed and containerized applications at scale.
