Netflix Will Use HTML5 With OS X Yosemite (Bye Bye Plugins)

Netflix

Netflix users are only too familiar with plugins that demand to be updated. All that is about to change. The online video service has started streaming in HTML5 in Safari on OS X Yosemite. The company says it has been working with Apple to implement the premium video extensions in Safari, which allow playback of video content in the browser without the use of plugins.

Apple implemented the Media Source Extensions (MSE) using their video pipeline on OS X, an update that lets users watch Netflix in 1080p without hogging the CPU or draining their battery. Apple also implemented the Encrypted Media Extensions (EME), which provide content protection. Then there is the Web Cryptography API (WebCrypto) in Safari, which allows Netflix to encrypt and decrypt communication between its JavaScript application and the Netflix servers.

In addition to Safari on OS X Yosemite, plugin-free playback is also available in IE 11 on Windows 8.1.
