Intel launches its second generation neuromorphic chip Loihi 2

Intel introduced Loihi 2 on Thursday – the company’s second-generation neuromorphic research chip.

The chipmaker also announced Lava, an open-source software framework for neuro-inspired applications. The Lava architecture is platform-agnostic; Intel says it has intentionally structured the code that way.

The research chip incorporates learnings from three years of use with the first-generation research chip, says Intel. Applications include robotic arms, neuromorphic skins and olfactory sensing.

Neuromorphic computing draws insights from neuroscience to create chips that try to function akin to the biological brain. Intel runs a neuromorphic research community – Intel NRC.
