WobbleWorks, a robotics company started in 2001 by Peter Dilworth (alumnus of MIT’s Leg Laboratory and the MIT Media Lab) and Maxwell Bogue (graduate of Purdue University’s Computer Science Program), has built the world’s first 3D printing pen, the 3Doodler.
If you want one, check out their Kickstarter page, where the pen is going for $50 a pop. The project has already had 3,330 backers, and has raised $30,000, in just a few hours of its official launch on Tuesday.
The WobbleWorks team is starting work on an initial commercial run, and the first 3Doodlers will be delivered to backers before Fall.
Peter Dilworth (Co-founder and CEO, WobbleWorks): We wanted to design a 3D printing device that could be used within minutes, without needing any technical knowledge, software or computers. We also wanted it to be affordable as well as fun, so that anyone could 3Doodle!
How does the 3Doodler work? You plug it into a power socket, and pretty much start drawing, says the company. A word of warning though, the metal tip of the pen can get as hot as 270C.
The 3Doodler uses ABS or PLA plastic as its ‘ink;. The plastic drawing that comes out from the pen is safe to touch. 3Doodler is compatible with 3mm ABS and PLA.
