Google unveils Android 8.0 Oreo

Google has released Android 8.0 Oreo – the company’s latest release of the Android platform – named after, gasp, Oreo cookies. The new version of the operating system comes with picture-in-picture and autofill, as well as stronger security and speed, says Google.

The company is pushing the sources to Android Open Source Project (AOSP) – if you would like to access it. Pixel and Nexus 5X/6P builds have already entered carrier testing, and Google says it expects to start rolling out devices with Android Oreo in phases soon.

Google tied up with the makers of Oreo, to unveil the latest Android statue (a kinetic one, this time around) during a solar eclipse viewing event in New York City near Chelsea Market, the location of the original Nabisco bakery where the first Oreo cookie was made.

Historically, Google has named each successive Android release after sweet treats like Eclair, Ice Cream Sandwich and most recently, Nougat.

The Oreo brand is owned by snacking company Mondelēz International, owners of the Cadbury Dairy Milk and Trident gum brands.
