Gmail is now using an encrypted HTTPS connection when users check or send email. In addition, every single email message users send or receive, is now encrypted while moving internally between the company’s data centers, says Google. This change means no can listen in on mails, even on public WiFi. The messages are also safe from snooping internally, as they travel through Google’s infrastructure.
Google says the company made this top priority, after last summer’s revelations; when it was reported that the National Security Agency was collecting data from email-providers, as the messages traveled between data centers.
Google has supported HTTPS since its launch; making it the default in 2010.
