Facebook Launches ‘Subscribe’, Because “it hasn’t been easy”

Facebook just launched the ‘Subscribe’ button. Zach Rait, software engineer with Facebook, writes in a blog post what the Subscribe thingy is all about. “Until now, it hasn’t been easy to choose exactly what you see in your News Feed,”  he says.

Yes, it does remind one of Twitter, and is reminiscent of Google+ followers. Maybe in the future, after their 15 months of fame, all social media sites will be commoditized into walking and talking and quacking a lot the same way.

What you can do differently now:

— Let people hear from you, even if you’re not friends

— Choose what you see from people in News Feed

— Hear from people, even if you’re not friends

To let people subscribe, you have to go to the Subscriptions Page and click on Allow Subscribers. Once you allow subscribers, you can decide who can comment, and what notifications you get. You’ll also see a Subscribers tab on your profile, where you can see who subscribes to you.

In true Facebook style, this latest addition to its UI also comes with a pretty elaborate documentation. 34,478 people like this at the time of this post.
