Covered California implements Google Cloud’s AI solutions

Covered California, California’s health insurance marketplace, has announced that it will use Google Cloud’s AI solutions to simplify the process of providing health insurance to California residents.

Covered California aims to improve the consumer and employee experience by automating parts of the documentation and verification process when residents apply for coverage. Starting in June, residents will be able to upload their documents through the Covered California online application and receive instant verification status, courtesy Google Cloud’s Document AI, which uses machine learning to automate the task of verifying resident information.

Covered California launched a pilot program in 2023 with Google Cloud and Deloitte to test the viability of Document AI. The initial results showed that the AI-powered solution achieved a document verification rate of 80-96 percent, depending on the document type, with an average of 84 percent.

Covered California is also using Google Cloud’s Assured Workloads to manage and maintain FedRAMP compliance and Google Security Operations to help protect against security threats.
