Cornell University is launching the Scientific Artificial Intelligence Center (SciAI Center), a new initiative backed by an $11.3 million grant from the Office of Naval Research. The center, aiming to foster human-AI collaboration using mathematics, is being led by Christopher Earls, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Cornell Engineering.
The co-investigators of the center include faculty from various disciplines across the university. The team involves Nikolaos Bouklas from mechanical and aerospace engineering, Anil Damle from computer science, and Alex Townsend from the mathematics department. All are also faculty members at the Center for Applied Mathematics at Cornell.
The center will focus on four intellectual themes: scientific data, operator learning, closure models, and complex systems. Three application areas will be prioritized: materials, turbulence, and autonomy.
Other institutions that will participate in the center’s initiatives include the United States Naval Academy; the University of California, Santa Cruz; the California Institute of Technology; the University of Cambridge; Brown University; the University of California, Berkeley; and Integer Technologies.
