AWS HealthScribe: Amazon’s new service for generating clinical documentation

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has unveiled AWS HealthScribe, a HIPAA-eligible service that allows healthcare software providers to develop applications that utilize speech recognition and generative AI to create clinical documentation.

By using a single API, providers can employ AWS HealthScribe to produce transcripts, extract key information such as medical terms and medications, and create summaries from doctor-patient discussions. This information can then be incorporated into an electronic health record (EHR) system, says AWS.

AWS HealthScribe is powered by Amazon Bedrock, which allows healthcare software providers to integrate generative AI capabilities into their applications. Initially, it covers two specialties: general medicine and orthopedics.
