AMD launches AI chips for business PCs

AMD has announced new Ryzen PRO 8040 Series mobile processors and Ryzen PRO 8000 Series desktop processors. The Ryzen PRO 8040 Series are built for business laptops and mobile workstations, while the Ryzen PRO 8000 Series are desktop processors for business users with AI capabilities, says AMD. Select models of both processor series include Ryzen AI technology.

The Ryzen PRO 8040 Series mobile processors have up to eight cores and are built on a 4nm process using “Zen 4” architecture. They offer WiFi-7 connectivity. The top model is the Ryzen 9 PRO 8945HS with eight cores, 16 threads, 24MB cache and Radeon 780M graphics.

For business desktops, the Ryzen PRO 8000 Series also features an eight-core “Zen 4” design on a 4nm process. It supports DDR5 memory, PCIe 4.0, and WiFi-7 on certain models. The Ryzen 7 PRO 8700G is the top model with eight cores, 16 threads, 24MB cache and Radeon 780M graphics.

The Ryzen PRO 8040 and 8000 Series processors will be available in systems from OEMs and channel partners starting in Q2 2024. OEM partners including HP and Lenovo are launching laptops, mobile workstations and desktops powered by the new Ryzen PRO processors. Microsoft is expanding its Copilot AI features on Windows systems with AMD processors.

AMD PRO technologies included with the processors provide enterprise security features, manageability for IT departments, and integration with Microsoft’s Pluton security processor, according to AMD. Over 150 AI-enabled software applications are expected to leverage the Ryzen AI capabilities by the end of 2024.
