Amazon 3Q 2011 Income Sank 33 Per Cent

Net sales increased 44 per cent to $10.88 billion in the third quarter, compared with $7.56 billion in third quarter 2010. Operating income was $79 million in the third quarter, compared with $268 million in third quarter 2010.

Net income decreased 73 per cent to $ 63 million in the third quarter, or 14 cents per share, compared with net income of $231 million, or 51 cents per share over the same period last quarter.

North America segment sales, representing the Company’s U.S. and Canadian sites, were $5.93 billion, up 44 per cent from third quarter 2010. International segment sales, representing the Company’s U.K., German, Japanese, French, Chinese, Italian and Spanish sites, were $4.94 billion, up 44 per cent from third quarter 2010.

Worldwide Media sales grew 24 per cent to $4.15 billion. Worldwide electronics and other general merchandise sales grew 59 per cent to $6.32 billion.

Fourth Quarter 2011 Guidance: Net sales are expected to be between $16.45 billion and $18.65 billion, or to grow between 27 per cent and 44 per cent compared with fourth quarter 2010. Operating income (loss) is expected to be between $200 million and $250 million, or between 142 per cent decline and 47 per cent decline compared with fourth quarter 2010.
