Akamai launches Nvidia GPU-based cloud service

Akamai has introduced a cloud-based service that utilizes Nvidia RTX 4000 Ada Generation GPUs for video content processing.

According to Akamai’s internal benchmarking, GPU-based encoding using the RTX 4000 processes frames per second (FPS) 25 times faster than traditional CPU-based encoding and transcoding methods.

The new GPU offering is tailored to meet the specific requirements of the media and entertainment industry.

Key use cases for the media-specific GPU service include:

1. Video transcoding and live video streaming
2. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) content

According to Akamai, while optimized for the media market, the new offering also has applicability for developers and companies looking to build apps tied to other industry use cases, such as:

1. Generative artificial intelligence and machine learning (GenAI/ML)
2. Data analysis and scientific computing
3. Gaming and graphics rendering
4. High-performance computing

The RTX 4000 GPU is designed to handle demanding workflows for digital content creation, 3D modeling, rendering, inferencing, and video content and streaming.
