Xplore Wins $9M Bobcat Computers Order

Rugged computers-maker Xplore Technologies, has received purchase orders in excess of $9 million for the delivery of 3,400 fully-rugged Bobcat Windows series of tablets and docks from a major U.S.  telecommunications company, Xplore said in a statement. The tablets will be used by field service technicians in the telecommunications provider’s construction and engineering divisions.

Microsoft is getting into the virtual reality space with its just-announced HoloLens, a holographic computer enabled by Windows 10. The head-mounted HoloLens display is expected to be compatible with Xbox One gaming consoles. The Redmond giant dubbed Windows 10 as the world’s first holographic computing platform. Windows 10  will include APIs that enable developers to create holographic experiences in the real world. With Windows 10, holograms become Windows universal apps, and all Windows universal apps can also work as holograms — making it possible to place three-dimensional holograms in the physical world. Intel Releases New Mobile Development Tools

Intel released a bunch of new developer tools as well as an integrated native developer experience, at the Mobile World Congress. Intel has released an Integrated Native Developer Experience (INDE) as a productivity suite for creating C++ or Java apps for devices running Android and Windows. Intel INDE integrates tools into development environments, assists with the app creation process and automatically updates. For embedded and mobile systems, Intel released the Inte System Studio 2014 which supports Android, Tizen IVI, Wind River Linux 6, and VxWorks 7 as well as cross-platform development from Windows hosts. Microsoft Kicks Off Worldwide Hackathon

Microsoft  kicked off WOWZAPP 2012: Worldwide Hackathon for Windows, the first simultaneous global hackathon for students, startups and professional developers in the company’s history. Following the recent Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 launches, more than 100 locations across five continents will hold weekend-long hackathons for students and other participants to create apps for the Windows ecosystem. Worldwide IT Spending To Grow 6% In 2012

Worldwide IT spending remains on course to grow 6% this year in constant currency, only slightly down on last year’s pace of 7% growth, in spite of continuing macroeconomic uncertainty, says IDC. According to IDC, strong performance in software, storage, enterprise network and mobile device markets has offset weaker trends in PCs, servers, peripherals and telecom provider equipment. However, the strength of the US dollar in the first half of 2012 means that IT spending in dollar terms is on course for growth of just 4% this year, a significant downturn for US-based tech vendors from the US dollar growth rate of 10.5% in 2011. HP Unveils Multitouch Hybrid PC And Ultrabooks

HP has launched three consumer notebooks featuring multitouch displays, including a  hybrid PC. The HP ENVY x2 is a hybrid PC, a notebook that doubles as a tablet. It has a detachable screen that becomes a full tablet when separated from the keyboard via a seamless magnetic latch. The HP SpectreXT TouchSmart Ultrabook  and HP ENVY TouchSmart Ultrabook  4 bring the power of touch to mobile PCs. These notebook PCs are the first HP products announced with Microsoft  Windows  8; additional notebooks, desktops and tablets will be announced later in 2012. Lenovo Unveils ThinkPad Tablet 2 For Windows 8

Lenovo unveiled its first tablet specifically designed for Windows 8, the ThinkPad Tablet 2. The multi-use tablet boasts an optional digitizer and pen for precision input, 3G wireless with Lenovo Mobile Access pay-as-you-go plans and 4G models, along with security features like a Fingerprint Reader, IT manageability technologies, and corporate-level service and support. Based on the upcoming Intel Atom Processor-based mobile platform and Windows 8 Pro, the ThinkPad Tablet 2 measures 9.8 mm and weigs less than 1.3 pounds, with a 10.1-inch screen. Security-enhanced and manageability technologies include an optional fingerprint reader, passwords are biometrically stored. The ThinkPad Tablet 2 is expected to be available when Windows 8 launches in October.

Windows 8 is going to hit the stands soon, and with the dawn of this new avatar of Windows, comes a few sleek hardware launches from the Redmond giant. In the coming weeks and months, the company will introduce two new Bluetooth-enabled keyboards and mice to the market – the Wedge Touch Mouse, the Wedge Mobile Keyboard, the Sculpt Touch Mouse, and the Sculpt Mobile Keyboard. Microsoft Reports First Loss Ever

Microsoft announced quarterly revenues of $18.06 billion for the quarter ended June 30, 2012. Operating income and loss per share for the quarter were $192 million and 6 cents per share. This is the first time in the history of the company that Microsoft reported a quarterly loss, since the company's initial public offering in early 1986. The Redmond giant had warned earlier that it will be taking a non-cash, non-tax-deductible income statement charge for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2012 for the impairment of goodwill in its Online Services Division segment, mostly related to its 2007 aQuantive acquisition. The financial results also reflect the deferral of $540 million of revenue related to the Windows Upgrade Offer. Microsoft Unveils The New Office; Also Available As Subscription

Microsoft  CEO Steve Ballmer has unveiled the customer preview of the new Microsoft Office. The next release features a design that works with touch, stylus, mouse or keyboard across new Windows devices, including tablets. It also takes into account social and sharing considerations, and offers a cloud service. You can download a preview of the new Office here.
