LG will introduce the world's first 21:9 gaming monitor compatible with AMD FreeSync technology at CES this year, says the company. The UltraWide Gaming Monitor is the company's first 21:9 monitor specifically developed for graphics-intensive gaming, says LG. AMD's FreeSync technology reduces the screen tearing that occurs when the monitor and graphics card are out of sync. Games that currently support support 21:9 resolution include Battlefield 4, World of Warcraft and ArcheAge .
Starbucks unveiled Powermat wireless charging in approximately 200 of its stores in the San Francisco Bay Area. The coffee store franchise says this is its first step in offering Powermat throughout its U.S. locations. Starbucks is also exploring rollouts in Europe and Asia within the year. Stores in the San Francisco Bay area are now equipped with 'Powermat Spots' - designated areas on tables and counters where customers can place their compatible device and charge wirelessly. In addition, Starbucks stores are offering Duracell Powermat "Rings" for purchase or loan that instantly upgrade any phone to wireless charging compatibility. Microsoft says it is working with Foxconn, Gionee, Lava (Xolo), Lenovo, LG, Longcheer, JSR, Karbonn and ZTE to develop on the Windows Phone platform. Existing Windows Phone manufacturers include Nokia, Samsung, HTC, and Huawei.
IBM inventors received 6,809 patents in 2013 says IBM. The company topped the annual list of U.S. patent leaders for the 21st consecutive year. IBM has 8,000 inventors residing in 47 different U.S. states and 41 countries. IBM's 2013 patent results represent inventions in areas such as IBM's Watson, cloud computing, Big Data and analytics, as well as cognitive systems. LG will unveil a Ultra HD TV lineup at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, starting this week. Models include the world’s first 21:9 aspect ratio curved Ultra HD TV (Model 105UC9), with a screen measuring a 105 inches diagonally. The new curved Ultra TVs also come with a forward-facing 7.2 multi-channel sound system, designed in collaboration with Harman Kardon.
BlackBerry signed a bundling agreement with LG, involving both standard and virtual preloading (using the LG App Manager). Under the terms of the agreement, BBM will come preinstalled on the LG G Pro Lite in markets around the world. Deutsche Telekom, LG, Mozilla, Qualcomm, TCL/Alcatel Onetouch, Telefónica and ZTE have come together to create the Open Web Device Compliance Review Board (CRB). The CRB is a partnership between operators, device OEMs, silicon vendors, and test solution providers, and will be an independently-operated organization. The goal of the CRB will be to promote the open Web device ecosystem, by encouraging API compliance as well as ensuring competitive performance. The CRB will also be the foundation for Mozilla’s Firefox OS branding requirements. Why is a compliance review board necessary? To reduce OS fragmentation, and provide a faster time to market, as well as to ensure performance uniformity, and provide global independent API certification, according to the CRB website.

William Cho, a 26-year veteran of LG Electronics, has been named president of LG Electronics USA. He succeeds Wayne Park, who has been promoted to the role of global sales and marketing officer, within the company. Mr. Cho will also lead the LG Electronics USA Home Entertainment business. In this role, he succeeds Jay Vandenbree, who is retiring at year-end. Mr. Cho was responsible for LG's global residential air conditioning business for the past two years. Previously, he served as president of LG Australia and president of LG Canada, besides holding sales roles in the United States. Mr. Cho joined LG in 1987 after earning his engineering degree from Busan University and his business degree from the Yonsei University graduate school in Korea.
Electronics conglomerate LG says the company is 'actively pushing forward' its energy solutions business. The group is developing new business opportunities in the clean energy market, and working on a solutions package consisting of energy generation, storage and delivery.
LG Electronics has released LG Gate, an enterprise-grade technologies package, that lets mobile employees utilize work resources from any location. LG Gate will launch first in the United States on the LG G2. LG Gate users can simultaneously run two operating systems on a single smartphone, enabling them to keep personal and business information completely separate.
A promotional event in Seoul organized by LG to showcase the recently-launched G2 smartphones, resulted in a scramble that sent some 20 people to the hospital. Held in a public park, the promotion involved the company releasing balloons in the air, with 100 free LG G2 coupons attached. The security personnel present were unable to control the crowd once the event started, especially as several people had come armed with BB guns to pop the balloons. According to a report by Kim Yoo-Chul in the Korea Times, LG is canceling outdoor events for G2 for now, and will be financially compensating those injured in the event.
