Midverse Studios has raised $6.5 million. IDG Capital Partners, Signia Ventures, and IDG-Accel China, participated in the investment.

Flappy Bird Game No Longer Available

In a surprise move, Dong Nguyen, Vietnam-based maker of Flappy Bird, has pulled the wildly popular game from app stores. Players who already have the game, can continue to play. Flappy Bird had soared to the top of charts in both iOS and Android. See The New Captain America Game Trailer Here, Release Slated For March

Gameloft has teamed up with Marvel to develop the new smartphone and tablet Captain America official game, based on the film coming this spring. Players can take the role of Captain America in the game, and lead a team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in battle against Marvel villains. The game will be released late March. Watch the trailer here:

Yahoo Buys Cloud Party

Yahoo has acquired Cloud Party, a two-year old real-time, multi-player, 3D game creation engine that ran directly in a browser with no plugins. Bee Cave Games Raises $1.9M

Bee Cave Games, developer of the Bee Cave Blackjack Casino game, has raised $1.9 million in seed funding from Matrix Partners and Dragonrise Capital. The funds will used to market and expand the Bee Cave Blackjack Casino game on Facebook, iOS and Android, says the company.

Nintendo Buys IA Labs Patent Portfolio

Nintendo obtained the entire patent portfolio of IA Labs during a sheriff’s sale in Montgomery County, Maryland. IA Labs sued Nintendo for patent infringement in April 2010. Nintendo defended the lawsuit and obtained judgment in its favor in February 2012. The trial court also awarded Nintendo some of the costs and fees it incurred defending the case. IA Labs appealed the trial court’s ruling. The appeals court confirmed Nintendo’s win in June 2013. IA Labs was further ordered to pay Nintendo additional costs incurred in defending the appeal. IA Labs did not pay the amount due, so a sheriff’s sale was conducted to sell IA Labs’ remaining assets, including its patent portfolio.    

Bessemer Venture Partners Opens Virtual Office In Minecraft

Bessemer Venture Partners, an early-stage venture capital firm with offices in the US, Israel, Brazil and India, is extending its global footprint by opening an office in Minecraft. You can see a tour of the office at www.bvp.com/contact/minecraft. The new facility is open to the public in Adventure Mode at mc.bvp.com. Minecraft has around 35 million residents. BVP has a track record funding technologies related to online gaming, such as Playdom, OMGPOP, Twitch, Top Free Games, and MindPirate.

Sony Launches PlayStation Now Game Streaming

Sony has launched PlayStation Now, a streaming game service that leverages cloud-based technology, at CES 2014. PlayStation now will become available in the United States starting this summer, and deliver PlayStation 3 game titles on PlayStation 4 and PS3 systems via the Internet, followed by the PlayStation Vita handheld system. Most 2014 U.S. models of Sony's Bravia TV lineup will support PS Now as well. Sony says it plans to expand the PlayStation Now streaming service beyond PlayStation platforms and Sony devices, allowing users to stream PlayStation games on numerous other Internet-connected devices. A beta program on PS3 systems in certain regions of the United States will be available from the end of January.

PlayStation 4 Global Sales Surpass 4.2M

Cumulative sales of the PlayStation 4 entertainment system have reached 4.2 million as of December 28, 2013, says Sony. PS4 software sales remained strong through the holiday season, with more than 9.7 million copies sold in retail stores and as digital downloads. Top selling games included Call of Duty: Ghosts from Activision, Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag from Ubisoft, Battlefield 4 and FIFA 14 from Electronic Arts, and Killzone Shadow Fall from Sony. Global PS Plus subscriptions have increased by more than 90% since the PS4 launch, says Sony. To date, more than 1.7 million gameplay broadcasts have been streamed from PS4 systems via video streaming platforms, Twitch and Ustream, totaling more than 55 million minutes. Over three million Xbox One consoles were sold to consumers in 13 countries before the end of 2013, says Microsoft. "The reaction from our fans was mind-blowing for our team," says Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Marketing, Strategy and Business, Xbox.

Alienware Launches Steam Machine Gaming Console

Alienware and Valve, creators of the Half-Life franchise, have collaborated to design the first dedicated Alienware Steam Machine gaming console. The Alienware Steam Machine includes a custom-built chassis to provide optimal thermal and acoustic management, and comes in a sleek design. Every Steam Machine includes a Steam Controller designed for use with a wide variety of game genres, and is powered by the SteamOS, a custom OS built atop Linux. The Alienware Steam Machine is scheduled to launch in late 2014. In addition to the Alienware Steam Machine PC gaming console, the Alienware X51 desktop will also be available as a Steam Machine.

Plain Vanilla Games Raises $22 Million

Plain Vanilla Games, the studio behind QuizUp, one of the fastest growing iPhone games, has raised $22 million in funding. The investment was led by Sequoia Capital, with existing investors including Tencent, also participating. The latest round bring the total investment in Plain Vanilla Games to over $27 million till date. QuizUp was released in November, and has more than five million people using the app, according to the company.

Candy Crush Saga Gets Dreamworld Parallel Game Mode

Casual games company King, has released an expansion of the popular Candy Crush Saga game. Titled Dreamworld, the new game mode will transport players to a parallel world of dream-inspired levels in Candy Crush Saga. Dreamworld is available across Facebook and mobile platforms (iOS and Android), and is available to players who have completed Level 50 on the Saga map.

ARM Acquires Geomerics

ARM has acquired Geomerics, a software company based in Cambridge, UK, that specialises in creating lighting technology for the video game industry. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Nival Raises $6M

Nival, a developer of cross-platform strategy games, has raised $6 milion Series A round of funding. The investment was led by Almaz Capital, with participation from existing investors Sergey Orlovskiy, CEO and founder of Nival, holding the majority stake; Russian software distributor 1C; and Mail.ru Group. The funds will be used to expand into global markets, says the company. With offices in Hallandale, Florida; Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia; Kiev, Ukraine and Minsk, Belarus Nival currently has more than 200 employees across four development studios.
