Nintendo Working With Universal On Theme Parks

Nintendo characters are coming to a theme park near you, as part of a collaboration between Universal and the game-maker. The two companies say they are still working on exact details, but immersive experiences will include major attractions at Universal's theme parks and will feature Nintendo's most famous characters and games.

Virtual Nose Can Solve Motion Sickness From VR Games, Study Finds

Virtual reality games often cause simulator sickness – inducing vertigo and sometimes nausea - but research findings from the computer graphics technology department at Purdue University, may offer a cure. In the form of a virtual nose. The researchers say that the virtual nose, or "nasum virtualis," reduces simulator sickness when inserted into popular games. Various physiological systems govern the onset of simulator sickness: a person's overall sense of touch and position, or the somatosensory system; liquid-filled tubes in the ear called the vestibular system; and the oculumotor system, or muscles that control eye movements. Assassin’s Creed Rogue Will Have Eye-Tracking

Assassin's Creed Rogue, the new installment in the multimillion dollar Assassin's Creed franchise, will feature integrated eye-tracking input in its PC version. This makes it the world's first AAA game to incorporate eye tracking as a component of gameplay. Tobii Tech, a company working on eye tracking technology, is partnership with Ubisoft for gameplay.

Microsoft Unveils Windows Holographics, HoloLens Headets

Microsoft is getting into the virtual reality space with its just-announced HoloLens, a holographic computer enabled by Windows 10. The head-mounted HoloLens display is expected to be compatible with Xbox One gaming consoles. The Redmond giant dubbed Windows 10 as the world’s first holographic computing platform. Windows 10  will include APIs that enable developers to create holographic experiences in the real world. With Windows 10, holograms become Windows universal apps, and all Windows universal apps can also work as holograms — making it possible to place three-dimensional holograms in the physical world. Soccer Club Manchester United Gets Into Social Casino Games

Soccer club Manchester United and KamaGames have inked a global partnership and multi-year deal, in which KamaGames becomes the official social casino games partner of Man U, bringing branded mobile and online games to its 659 million global followers. New Nintendo 3DS XL Launches This February

A 'new' Nintendo 3DS XL system will launch in the U.S. on Feb. 13, says Nintendo. The revamped edition of the console was launched by the company last year, but not yet available in the U.S. Additions to the new system include new C Stick and ZL/ZR buttons, and 3D face-tracking technology,  as well as built-in NFC functionality that allows for communication with amiibo figures. Prices for the new 3DS XL systems start from $199.99. The console will be available in two colors - red and black.

LG To Unveil 21:9 Gaming Monitor With FreeSync

LG will introduce the world's first 21:9 gaming monitor compatible with AMD FreeSync technology at CES this year, says the company. The UltraWide Gaming Monitor is the company's first 21:9 monitor specifically developed for graphics-intensive gaming, says LG. AMD's FreeSync technology reduces the screen tearing that occurs when the monitor and graphics card are out of sync. Games that currently support support 21:9 resolution include Battlefield 4, World of Warcraft and ArcheAge .

Virtuos Raises Series B Round Of Funding

Virtuos, a game developer specializing in 3D art and game development for consoles and mobile devices, has raised a series B round of funding from Shanghai-based Xuhui Venture Capital. Steven Chiang, former President of Games at Zynga, and Franois Candelon, senior partner for Technology, Media and Telecommunications and managing director at Boston Consulting Group are joining the Virtuos board.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Day Zero Edition Now Available

The Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Day Zero Edition is now available worldwide. The new title from Activision Publishing, a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, marks the first Call of Duty game led by developer Sledgehammer Games as well as the first time for a three-year development cycle. Advanced Warfare also introduces the exoskeleton - the biggest core movement change in franchise history, according to Activision.

Unity To Support Rift

Oculus is partnering with Unity to make Oculus an official platform and build target for the game-development engine. Unity will now fully support Oculus and the Rift, along with a dedicated add-on that includes stereo imaging optimizations, 3D audio support, and other features specifically for virtual reality. Oculus will be now be supported in both the Free and Pro versions of Unity.

Destiny Grosses More Than $325M In Five Days

Destiny, a game from Activision Publishing, a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, has grossed more than $325 million worldwide in its first five days, according to Chart-Track, first parties, retail customer sell-through information and Activision Blizzard internal estimates. According to Bungie, Destiny players logged more than 100 million hours of online play by the end of the first week and participated in 137 million activities.

Microsoft Buys Minecraft Developers Mojang

Microsoft has reached an agreement to acquire Mojang, the Stockholm-based game developer behind the Minecraft franchise. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will acquire Mojang for $2.5 billion. The acquisition comes with a catch though; creators of the game that lets people use Lego-like blocks to create new digital worlds, Markus Persson and Jens Bergensten are not joining Microsoft, but say will be starting new projects. The Mojang team will join Microsoft Studios, which includes the studios behind global blockbuster franchises Halo, Forza, and Fable, among others. Amazon Buys Gaming Video Platform Twitch

Amazon has reached an agreement to acquire Twitch Interactive for $970 million. Twitch provides a  live video platform that lets gamers watch and broadcast video game play. The site Twitch.TV is extremely popular with gamers, with more than 55 million unique visitors viewing over 15 billion minutes of content in July. Microsoft Buys SyntaxTree

Microsoft has acquired SyntaxTree, developers of the UnityVS plugin for Visual Studio. UnityVS enables Unity developers to use Visual Studio to author, browse and debug the code for their Unity applications. The Redmond giant says it will make the existing UnityVS plugin available for free on its download site. The SyntaxTree team will be joining the Visual Studio division. The Unity cross-platform game engine is used by over two million developers.
