Rovio Has A New CEO

Mikael Hed will be succeeded by Pekka Rantala, as CEO of Rovio, the Finland-based company behind the popular Angry Birds games. Previously, Mr. Rantala was CEO of Finnish beverage-maker Hartwell. He also had a 14-year stint with Nokia. Mr. Hed will continue to have a position in the Rovio board. Additionally, he has been appointed as chairman of Rovio Animation Studios. The CEO transition will happen by January 1, 2015.

Angry Birds Star Wars II Launches

Rovio has released Angry Birds Star Wars II. The game is available for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone 8 devices worldwide. Angry Birds Star Wars II is the sequel to the Angry Birds Star Wars game, and for the first time, lets players choose sides, where they can play as the bird or the pigs. There are also 30 telepods made available by toy-maker Hasbro, in collaboration with Rovio. These telepods are Angry Birds toys that can be 'teleported' into the online game as actual characters.        

Angry Birds Coming To Consoles Now

May the flock be with you! Activision Blizzard, in conjunction with Rovio and Lucasfilm, is bringing Angry Birds to consoles. The Angry Birds Star Wars game is expected to release on console gaming systems on October this year. The game will come with new levels, features, and platform-unique design elements, like multi-player modes. The Angry Birds Star Wars game will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Wii and Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS hand-held systems.  

Hasbro To Launch ‘Telepods’ At Comic-Con

Toymaker Hasbro will launch the Telepods platform at Comic-Con this year, says the company. Telepods is a fully-integrated play experience that 'teleports' physical characters into digital gaming and app experiences. The Telepods line will first be released this fall based on and integrated into the Angry Birds Star Wars II game.

Angry Birds Cartoons To Debut Soon Across Apps

The first episode of Angry Birds Toons will debut on March 17 across all Angry Birds apps, with a brand new cartoon airing the same time every weekend. Rovio is launching a video distribution channel across all of its Angry Birds game titles on smartphones and tablets. The mobile game Temple Run 2 has been downloaded over 50 million times on iOS, Android and Kindle devices, in just 13 days, making it the fastest downloaded mobile game in history. In April 2012, Angry Birds Space from the Rovio stable had earned that distinction with 50 million downloads in 35 days. Temple Run 2, following in the footsteps of Temple Run, was originally launched exclusively on the Apple App Store on January 17. Your Smartphone Is Sharing Way Too Much, Finds Carnegie Mellon

People are often surprised to learn that popular mobile applications on their smartphones are sharing their location, contact lists and other sensitive information, Carnegie Mellon University researchers say. Though some of that sharing is legitimate, the researchers maintain that user perception nevertheless is a starting point in evaluating the privacy and security risks of mobile apps. “No one expects Angry Birds to use location data, but it does,” said Jason Hong, associate professor in the Human-Computer Interaction Institute. Iron Man, Despicable Me Producers Making Angry Birds Movie

What better way to celebrate the third anniversary of the release of Angry Birds, by unleashing flying pigs, angry birds and stolen pigs on the big screen? Rovio has signed Despicable Me producer John Cohen to do the honors as producer of an Angry Birds movie. David Maisel, former chairman of Marvel Studios and executive producer of Iron Man, will be executive producer of the feature film, coming to theaters in summer 2016. The film will be produced and financed by Rovio, outside the studio system, and the company will retain creative control. The upcoming movie marks Rovio Entertainment’s first foray into feature films.
