Amazon  has launched Amazon Coins, a new virtual currency for purchasing apps, games and in-app items on Kindle Fire.

The virtual currency seems to be a strategy to attract more and more developers to work on the Kindle platform, the company says it will give customers “tens of millions of dollars’ worth” of Amazon Coins to use on developers’ apps in the Amazon Appstore.

Paul Ryder (Vice President, Apps and Games, Amazon): Developers continue to report higher conversion rates on Amazon compared to other platforms.

If you are a developer, you can find more information, including a link to the Amazon mobile app SDK here. For Kindle users, virtual currency will be available this May.
